Tips from a Pro
The best advise I can give fellow Voice123 members is, patience. Patience to develop "your sound". Patience to develop your marketing plan. You certainly will get plenty of auditions through V123 - use those auditions to practice and fine-tune your craft. I have been with countless production houses, studios, online websites, vo agencies and web membership sites. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Plan on doing as many auditions for as many clients as you can.
Do not lower your rate to get a job. It's much easier to negotiate lower rates later - but more difficult to raise them after you get the job. Granted, there will be many vo people who call themselves "pros" and work to do a 10 minute presentation for $50.00. Let them have it. Concentrate on the area of your expertise. Set a rate and stick to it. Clients will get what they pay for and they will thin-out over time. You can't base your career or expanded hobby of voice work on what others will do to get the job.
I've been auditioning for over 30 years and have gotten some pretty big jobs that paid me more than I would have asked. Find out what they have budgeted and be fair. Under-promise and over-deliver is my motto. I try and superserve my clients so they will come back next time they need my style. You won't get every job you try out for. Look forward not back. Hone your demo as your ability matures. Stay in contact with clients & associates to keep your name top of mind.
Above all - be true to your craft, your ability, your industry and network with as many associates in your business as you can. Write articles, stay on top of the message boards, soak up information like a sponge and continue to improve and learn. Change is inevitable, embrace it and become better. You owe it to...yourself.
